The Industrial Gas Industry is comprised of many types of companies, groups, and associations from large multinational corporations to small independent family-owned businesses. CryoGas International profiles these companies and associations on a regular basis. This month, for the first time, we present a profile of a Purchasing cooperative, a group made up of many mall to large distributors of welding equipment and gases.
The Independent Welding Distributors Cooperative (IWDC) is a purchasing and marketing cooperative that facilitates
the purchases of hardgoods and gases on behalf of its membership to enable independent distributors to offer goods and services at competitive prices. Incorporated in 1994, IWDC is owned and member-controlled by 145 independent gas and welding distributors in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

The Cooperative is structured to provide its members with a purchasing advantage for hardgoods, gases, and related services. It is also organized to provide sharing of best practices among its members and training in distributor operations, marketing, and administration.

IWDC currently purchases in excess of $250 million of hardgoods, cylinders, cryogenic equipment, gases, and related supplies. Through their 630+ locations, IWDC members represent over $1.6 billionin the retail sales of hardgoods and packaged and bulk gases in the North American gasand welding market.Headquartered in Indianapolis, IN, IWDC is managed by Roger Neu, President/CEO under the direction of a nine-member Board of Directors (see below).

Organized under its bylaws and operating under a five-year strategic plan, the Directors are all individual owners of IWDC member companies located throughout five regions in North America. As shown in Figure 1, IWDC now has over 630 member locations. The Cooperative has a staff of twenty-two in Indianapolis to service its membership. All members must be privately-

IWDC MISSION STATEMENT: Integrating the talents of members and vendors to provide excellence in products and services to customers as the most innovative and preferred channel to the marketplace.
owned independent gas and welding distributors, selling both welding supplies and gases. The group’s purchasing power allows IWDC to negotiate competitive prices on products and services. The IWDC currently has over 200 special purchase agreements for its membership and members and are free to pick and choose the agreements that best fit their needs. Nothing is mandatory. IWDC’s development of an exclusive private-branded line of hardgoods (Weldmark®), specialty gases (PurityPlus® Specialty Gases) and welding shielding gases (Weldmark® Shielding
Gases) adds to its strength as a purchasing cooperative.

IWDC also offers training programs for operations as well as specialty gas sales and technical personnel. These programs are designed and developed exclusively for IWDC members to ensure quality and to enable private networking. The IWDC began operations as IWDA (Independent Welding Distributors Association) at the end of World War II.

Prior to World War II, large gas manufacturers began encouraging customers to buy from warehouses,
auto parts stores, farm equipmentdealers, hardware stores, and many other suppliers. hardgoods manufacturers followed suit. In 1948, Otto Koll of Welders Supply Service (Modesto, CA), Andy Andrews of Oxygen Service & Supply (Santa Rosa, CA), and a group of distributors in the western part of the US, with no ties to a large gas company, decided to pool their purchasing power to enhance their competitive position.

Under the leadership of Thomas Kean of Sierra Oxygen Company and Otto Koll, a corporation comprised of 16 companies was formed in 1948, which came to be known as the IWDA. By the early 1980s there were 54
members, which made the IWDA the largest unified welding distributor organization in the western US, Mexico,
and Canada.
THE ANNUAL SALES AND PURCHASING CONVENTION

The Cooperative sponsors a Sales and Purchasing Convention each year that connects IWDC members with IWDC-approved and recommended vendors. This Convention gives members the opportunity for extensive networking and relationship-building with IWDC vendors and members as well as practical knowledge about new products and
issues affecting the welding and gas markets.

The Convention includes a business session and educational/training workshops and seminars,
which are conducted for the sole benefit of the IWDC members. The Convention also includes a full-day “booth program” where IWDC-approved and recommended vendors are able to conduct business with the
membership.

Special “show pricing” (discounts above and beyond established IWDC pricing) is offered to members who attend the
Convention. Purchase orders placed during this one-day booth program typically exceed $12 million.
